iLASIK

Visual Freedom with iLASIK: the next generation in LASIK                                                                        The Alabama Vision Center was the first facility in Alabama to offer CustomVue®IR ("IR" or Iris Registration, a proprietary technology where the laser actually moves as the eye moves when patients go from a seated position, where all measurements are made before surgery, to a reclining position for surgery; this enhances treatment accuracy).  We are once again leading the way by offering the best and newest generation of LASIK laser vision correction: iLASIK.  With iLASIK, we no longer use a metal blade  (microkeratome) to cut the cornea as most centers still do. Instead, we use the Intralase laser to create the corneal flap. We then treat the cornea with the most advanced excimer laser available: VISX CustomvueIR Star 4 (more LASIK procedures have been performed with this laser than all others combined).  This "blade-free all laser" iLASIK is the safest and most precise method of laser vision correction available today. CustomVue® represents a major breakthrough in laser vision correction and can result in improved quality of vision compared to conventional laser vision correction. The Star 4 WaveScan Wavefront System is the only FDA approved excimer laser system that utilizes Wavefront Technology to customize your laser vision correction procedure. CustomVue® uses the Wavefront System to measure distortions in your eye's entire optical system. Until recently, conventional laser vision correction, like glasses and contact lenses, could only correct the

visual distortions called, "lower order aberrations" commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It is estimated that these lower order aberrations account for 80-90% of the overall quality of your vision. Higher order aberrations account for the remaining 10-20% of the overall quality of vision. Eye doctors typically measure vision using the Snellen Eye Chart, which can only determine how much vision you have (quantity) but not necessarily how well you see (quality). According to the Snellen vision test, your vision is considered "normal" if you can identify the letters on the 20/20 line from a distance of 20 feet. Just being able to identify the letters however, does not necessarily mean you have excellent vision, especially if they are not crisp and clear.

Today we know there are visual distortions in your eye's optical system called "higher order aberrations" that can affect the clarity of your vision regarding how well you see in low light levels and at night. These aberrations can cause shadows, glare, halos, poor contrast, and other annoying visual effects. All eyes have some level of higher and lower order aberrations so every patient has the potential for improved vision with CustomVue® laser vision correction. The goal of CustomVue® iLASIK is to decrease the risk of undesirable side effects and improve both the quality of your vision and your lifestyle.

CustomVue® is the process of reshaping your cornea to address both lower and higher order aberrations. This is accomplished by using a 3-dimensional map of your unique optical system as captured and measured by the Wavescan wavefront system to guide the VISX Star4 LASER with ActiveTRAK as it reshapes your cornea.
